What is the paleo diet?

The paleo diet, also known as the caveman diet, is a modern diet that attempts to mimic the diet of humans who lived during the paleolithic era prior to the development of agriculture. This diet primarily consists of foods that would have been available to our hunter-gatherer ancestors. Gastroenterologist Walter L. Voegtlin first popularized the paleo diet in the 1970s with his book “The Stone Age Diet”. In it Voegtlin argues that humans are evolved predominately to be carnivors and should eat mostly fats and proteins with a small amount of carbohydrates for peak health.

What foods are allowed on the paleo diet?

The paleo diet focuses on nutrient rich natural foods. Naturally raised meats such as grass-fed beef or wild game are preferred, but any lean animal meat is acceptable. Most fruits, vegetables and nuts are allowed with the exception of a few.

What foods are not allowed on the paleo diet?

Processed foods, grains, legumes, and dairy products are not allowed on the paleo diet. Processed foods include excess sugars, sodium, preservatives, dyes and other unnatural additives that can be harmful to your health. Many people have gluten allergies or lactose intollerance which are both indicative of humanity having not fully evolved for the consumption of wheat or dairy products. Even if you don’t have gluten allergies or lactose intollerance it is thought that these evolutionary deficiencies can have a negative impact upon you when these foods are consumed causing you to gain weight and develope a variety of diseases.

Are there exceptions to the paleo diet?

There are many people who allow for dairy products to be consumed so long as they come from organic grass-fed cows without additional hormones. Some also allow for 1 to 3 cheat meals each week where you can eat whatever you want so long as you maintain the diet for all of the other meals.

What are the benefits reported on the paleo diet?

An enormous range of benefits have been reported from fat-loss to increased energy to improved skin condition to curing a variety of digestive diseases.

Can the paleo diet help me lose weight?

Many people report great success at losing fat around their midsection and throughout their bodies.

Can I still eat desserts on the paleo diet?

It is possible to replace wheat flour, milk and sugar with things such as coconut or almond flour, coconut milk and honey. With these alternative ingredients you can figure out how to make most of the sweets you’re used to, however, if fat-loss is your goal it is not recommended to eat these desserts too often. Dried fruits and nuts can make for a great healthy snack.

Is the paleo diet expensive?

Whole and organic natural foods can be more expensive, however, there are many ways you can save money. If you want to get really close to a paleo lifestyle you can hunt and gather (or grow) your own food. Visit a local farmer’s market. Get frozen fruits and vegetables. Buy in bulk. Purchase fish frozen because it’s both cheaper and more fresh than the already frozen and then thawed fish.
